The flamboyant family of grebes are special in many ways.

They eat their own feathers, have an original way of sunbathing, are equipped with one-of-a-kind lobed feet among birds, and exhibit varied and complex courtship displays. Besides all that, their ability to make floating nests allows them to live their whole lives in the water. Although grebes form a fraction of the world’s avian family, representing just 22 species, they’ve made a huge impact on Misjel Decleer, nature photographer and guide at the Zwin Nature Park, over the past decade.

Misjel Decleer knows the Zwin Nature Park like the back of his hand. He’ll camp out for hours in his floating hide, waiting to snap the perfect shot. The last ten years have given him an intimate view of grebe lives.

‘My days would start about an hour and a half before sunrise, even earlier if the grebes were courting or had chicks. I’d almost always head out when it was pitch black and sit in my floating hide, wrapped in a dry suit, ready to photograph the birds in their habitat.’

This photography exhibition showcases Misjel’s observations over the past decade
